Its funny you mention that book -- I actually have it, but its not what inspired the post.  

Glad you appreciated the post, though.  Will you be a rockstar?  As I mentioned to a friend, the recipe is easy to draw up, execution is the hard part.

As someone who has spent a great deal of time in an IT organization, my opinion is that you may find yourself as a standout in the marching band that is IT.  But working for a product company is more likely to enable you to stand out.  I ask: who gets the girl?  The drum major (no famous names come to mind) or Jon Bon Jovi (dating myself, but you get the point).
