It never ceases to amaze me how this simple idea has such a hard time taking root.  Seems like it should follow from: 1) we need to be in a better place, 2) where are we?

This used to be pretty hard to collect or share metrics but with today's highly integrable tools and your own team portal (you have a team portal don't you?) it can be automated to a large degree.  A few scripts tied into your continuous integration platform can gather lots of actionable information about quality, velocity, progress, etc...

I really get stone faced when folks start to throw road blocks like - "we can't measure lines of code, we should use function points".  Get off my team.   :-)</description>
